Dr. Katie van den Heuvel, PT, PAM-MC

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy for North Carolina and Florida, my patients appreciate the warmth, professional integrity, and open communication that define my treatments. I’m determined to help my patients and their families and caregivers understand their health and physical needs so they can be well informed when making important health decisions.

I treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, as well as addressing vestibular issues such as dizziness, and concussions. I am also a Performing Arts Medicine Physical Therapist, specializing in dance. Telehealth visits allow you to perform better with the convenience of getting treatment at home, work, the gym, or the dance studio, without the hassle of long commutes or crowded waiting rooms.

The Skills to Play

  • Is my condition suitable for online/telehealth Physical Therapy?
Many injuries and healthcare conditions are appropriate for online/telehealth Physical Therapy treatment. If you need specialty services not available locally, want education specific to your home setup, prefer one on one care with your PT and/or family members/caregivers in your home, need to make sure you can do all your home exercises in your home environment, want to save time on driving or waiting in a waiting room, or need to be home to care for children or other family members, telehealth PT may be better for you than a traditional in-clinic experience. Virtual PT is perfect for dance/sports injuries, balance, postoperative care, pain management, and more. Still not sure if it will work for you? Book a free video consultation to chat about your specific needs. Learn more: https://www.choosept.com/resources/detail/6-reasons-to-consider-telehealth-physical-therapy
  • Do I need a referral from a physician?
No! All 50 states have at least some form of direct access to #GetPTFirst, to save you time on waiting for physician appointments and referrals. Dr. Katie, PT is licensed in Florida and in North Carolina to provide PT. North Carolina has unlimited direct access- yay! Florida allows direct access for 30 days, after which time you will need a treatment plan signed by an approved provider, such as your physician.
  • What if I don't live in FL or NC?
In many cases, you may qualify for Wellness Services wherever you live in the world. You are also still elligible for screenings.
  • What are Wellness services?
Wellness services are to promote or maintain physical fitness and mobility, but do not treat or correct a medical condition. For example, you may need to focus on general strength, conditioning, and/or flexibility, or you may have reached a limit with traditional Physical Therapy but would like to continue progressing toward your goals.
  • If I need PT somewhere else, do you provide referrals?"
While I don't provide formal referrals, I do have a failrly wide network of professionals across the United States and may be able to help you find someone in your area. I recommend these resources to help you find the right person for you: General Physical Therapists- https://aptaapps.apta.org/APTAPTDirectory/FindAPTDirectory.aspx Dance healthcare providers- https://iadms.org/find-a-provider/ Dance and other Performing Arts Medicine providers- https://pama.memberclicks.net/referral-directory Also consider looking into Danse Medica, the Bridge Dance Project, or Doctors for Dancers.
  • Wait, why are you helping me find a different PT?"
While I'd love to help you out with whatever you need, it's more important to me that you find someone who is the best fit for you. No one Physical Therapist is the best for every single person that needs help. I am a firm believer in collaboration when it comes to helping you perform your best.
  • How will you diagnose my injury or condition?
The same way I have with in-person visits for many years: listen to your story, ask you diagnostic questions, watch how you move, and ask you to try different positions and movements.
  • How do you perform virtual treatments?
For consultation, wellness, screening, or PT appointments you will get a video meeting link once you book yourself for the day and time and that works best for your schedule. (PT MUST start with a PT Evaluation before booking any treatment visits.) Make sure you wear comfortable clothes you can move in well, and have your electronic device of choice ready with enough battery power and a strong internet connection. Laptops and tablets work well so you can move the camera to different heights and angles and see the screen easily, but phones and desktop computers can work if needed. We'll work together to develop a plan that meets your needs each day.
  • What is a Dance Wellness Screening?
Thanks for asking! These evidence based screenings include functional mobility, strength, and flexibility. Participants receive a report with additional education and interpretation of their individual results.
